About The Position

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy seeks a seasonal Boat Captain to run white shark ecotourism and research trips. This position requires a USCG licensed Captain with extensive knowledge of local waters and reports to the Ecotourism Coordinator.

Requirements

  • USCG Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel (OUPV) six passenger license required.
  • Weekends required.
  • Knowledge of area waters, specifically in and around Chatham, Provincetown, and Cape Cod Bay.
  • Solid understanding of the area’s tides and weather patterns.
  • Be able to safely navigate waterways.
  • Read gauges to verify sufficient levels of hydraulic fluid, air pressure, and oxygen.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Transport guests safely for shark ecotourism, research, and training trips.
  • Provide guests with safety briefing.
  • Maintaining overall appearance and cleanliness of the vessel.
  • Maintain vessel and equipment on board, such as engines, navigational systems, fire extinguishers, and life preservers. All passengers should wear PFDs at all times while on board (inflatables provided).
  • Coordinate with Fleet Captain for engines to be serviced every 100 hours of operation.
  • Keep accurate master's log which includes engine hours of operation, a daily summary of events, the number of people aboard, radio log, and the chronometer log.
  • Inspect vessel each day of operation to ensure efficient and safe operation of vessel and equipment, and conformance to regulations.
  • Steer and operate vessel, using radios, depth finders, radars, lights, buoys, and lighthouses.
  • Assume primary responsibility to ensure that vessel is moored securely & safely at all times.
  • Collaborate with the Fleet Captain and other team members to schedule vessel use and coordinate maintenance downtime.
  • Represent the organization within the maritime community, maintaining positive relationships with partners, vendors, regulatory agencies, and fellow mariners.
  • Purchase supplies and equipment as needed. Pre-approval required for purchases >$100.00.
