About The Position

The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC), one of the world's largest nonprofit veterinary specialty hospitals and a leader in advanced companion animal medicine, seeks an exceptional Board-Certified Veterinary Surgeon with expertise and interest in cardiac and cardiothoracic surgery. The successful candidate will join AMC's collaborative team of specialists and play a central role in expanding advanced cardiovascular surgical services for companion animals. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to AMC's mission of providing compassionate patient care, advancing veterinary science through research, and educating future veterinary leaders. The Cardiac Surgeon will work closely with specialists in Cardiology, Interventional Radiology, Anesthesiology, Emergency and Critical Care, Diagnostic Imaging, Oncology, Internal Medicine, and Rehabilitation to deliver comprehensive, state-of-the-art cardiovascular care.

Requirements

  • DVM, VMD, or equivalent veterinary degree.
  • Board Certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or equivalent international surgical specialty college.
  • Demonstrated expertise in advanced thoracic and cardiovascular surgery.
  • Eligibility for veterinary licensure in New York State.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Commitment to AMC's missions of patient care, education, and research.

Nice To Haves

  • Fellowship training or substantial experience in veterinary cardiac surgery.
  • Experience collaborating with cardiology and interventional cardiology services.
  • Record of scholarly publications and clinical research productivity.
  • Experience in resident and intern training within an academic or specialty hospital setting.
  • Interest in program development and innovation in cardiovascular medicine.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consultation, diagnosis, and surgical treatment for patients with congenital and acquired cardiovascular diseases.
  • Perform advanced cardiothoracic and cardiovascular surgical procedures in canine and feline patients.
  • Collaborate with AMC cardiologists in patient evaluation, treatment planning, and long-term management.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences and specialty rounds.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative treatment protocols and advanced surgical techniques.
  • Participate with clinical rotation for emergency cases with 8 other surgeons (1:9) rotation.
  • Help establish and grow a nationally recognized veterinary cardiac surgery program.
  • Develop clinical pathways, quality metrics, and outcomes assessment programs.
  • Support expansion of hybrid surgical-interventional cardiovascular procedures.
  • Promote excellence in patient safety, perioperative care, and clinical outcomes.
  • Participate in clinical, translational, and outcomes-based research initiatives.
  • Collaborate with AMC's Research Institute and external academic partners.
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international meetings.
  • Pursue grant-funded and philanthropic research opportunities that advance cardiovascular medicine and surgery.
  • Teach and mentor surgery residents, rotating interns, specialty interns, and visiting veterinarians.
  • Participate in continuing education programs for referring veterinarians and veterinary professionals.
  • Contribute to AMC's educational mission through lectures, rounds, and case-based teaching.
  • Foster a culture of academic inquiry, collaboration, and clinical excellence.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for referring veterinarians throughout the New York metropolitan area and beyond.
  • Participate in professional outreach, continuing education events, and collaborative initiatives that strengthen AMC's referral network.
  • Represent AMC at regional, national, and international veterinary conferences.
