About The Position

BASF’s Agricultural Solutions division connects innovation, customers, partners and agricultural experts and integrates sustainability criteria into all business decisions. We help farmers deliver the best possible outcomes, working to achieve the balance between economic, environmental and social value creation for sustainable and efficient agriculture. To support plant breeding programs in row crops, the Seeds unit maintains and develops state-of-art breeding processes. The Biometrics group focuses on statistical genetics, experimental design and data analysis aspects of these processes, in close collaboration with breeders and geneticists. The purpose of the role is to provide data analytics support to variety plant breeding programs in North America and support Biometrics team efforts globally. Requirements

  • Have a Ph.D. degree, preferred, in quantitative genetics, statistics, or equivalent or a MS degree in quantitative genetics, statistics, or equivalent.
  • Possess 4 years of industry experience in applied analytics to plant breeding supporting the development of commercial varieties and/or hybrids with a Ph.D or 8 years of industry experience in applied analytics to plant breeding supporting the development of commercial varieties and/or hybrids with a MS degree.
  • Demonstrate a strong record on deploying software and algorithms to support commercial plant breeding processes.
  • Have excellent knowledge of plant breeding and application of analytics to decision making.
  • Have expert level use of ASReml.
  • Display expertise in mixed models for modeling of complex traits with complex variance structures.
  • Are proficient in programming with R statistical software.
  • Have the ability to work in a multicultural environment.
  • Are able to travel up to 10-15%, domestically and internationally.

Nice To Haves

  • Are fluent in Portuguese (Brazilian) language, would be a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Using your experience in applied statistics to support field trial design for breeding programs.
  • Performing Multi-environment field trial data analysis for all important traits.
  • Assisting in the development of genomic selection models and providing predictions for breeding decisions.
  • Contributing to the development of new algorithms for prediction and superior decision making.
  • Training and supporting breeders in experimental design and data analysis activities.
  • Developing decision making tools or prototypes using R and/or java to enable efficient decision making for stakeholders.
  • Contributing to building the internal critical mass on breeding and quantitative genetics.
