About the position

The Billing Clerk at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is responsible for conducting patient registration, verifying insurance, and managing payment postings within the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system. This role involves ensuring compliance with healthcare billing standards and acting as a liaison between patients and various departments to facilitate accurate billing and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct patient registration by obtaining demographics and insurance coverage.
  • Verify insurance coverage for patients according to health plan guidelines.
  • Post payments and adjustments in the EMR system and reconcile daily for the CBO.
  • Update and correct patient demographic and insurance information in EMR systems.
  • Assist Billing Specialists with printing medical records and scanning information into the EMR system.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality regarding access to clinical information.
  • Prepare and distribute correspondence for payors and patients.
  • Contact clinics to obtain and enter referral information and prior authorizations for billing.
  • Respond to calls and ensure accurate information is obtained from callers.
  • Document information required for third-party reimbursement and ensure compliance with Medicare and payor guidelines.
  • Assist the Revenue Cycle Department with data gathering for audits and billing information.
  • Act as a patient point of contact and liaise with various departments for documentation needs.
  • Participate in educational activities and attend staff meetings as scheduled.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Two years of general office or clerical experience, or one year of medical, hospital, or healthcare billing experience.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, especially Word and Excel.
  • Experience with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and insurance verification processes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Thorough knowledge of registration, insurance verification, prior authorizations, and payment reconciliation processes.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
