About the position

The Bilingual Teacher (K-8 ESL) at Chicago Public Schools is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students in developing their English language skills. This role involves creating lesson plans, assessing student progress, and implementing effective teaching methodologies to ensure that limited English proficient students can participate fully in the educational program. The teacher will also manage classroom behavior and maintain communication with parents and guardians regarding student performance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instructional planning and lesson preparation for assigned students.
  • Administer tests and language assessments to evaluate students' language abilities.
  • Assess students' progress and set expectations and goals in the bilingual program.
  • Develop and deliver lesson plans using appropriate instructional techniques.
  • Establish positive learning standards and evaluate students' progress.
  • Maintain accurate records of students' achievements and attendance.
  • Implement instructional methods based on contemporary learning theories.
  • Participate in programs to improve student attendance and promote anti-vandalism initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain responsible rules of conduct within the classroom and school grounds.
  • Communicate with parents or guardians regarding students' academic progress and conduct.
  • Participate in professional development and staff meetings.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of all student teaching requirements.
  • Completion of coursework required for the appropriate teaching license(s) issued by the Illinois State Board of Education.
  • Possession of an Illinois State Board of Education issued educator license with a bilingual endorsement in the grade level being taught.
  • Knowledge of subject matter consistent with state certification requirements.
  • Knowledge of contemporary principles and practices of teaching.
  • Knowledge of classroom and behavior management techniques.
  • Ability to modify instruction to meet student needs.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in bilingual education or ESL teaching.
  • Familiarity with Illinois Learning Standards and Chicago Public Schools' policies.
