About the position

Devereux is seeking a Bilingual Registered Nurse who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of children and adolescents. This position involves working in a shelter program for unaccompanied children in Connecticut, providing high-quality, trauma-informed residential and educational services. The nurse will ensure that the healthcare needs of the children are met, including conducting assessments, administering medication, and promoting positive health behaviors. The ultimate goal is to ensure that every child receives the necessary support and is successfully discharged into the care of their family sponsor.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial nursing assessments and triage medical needs daily.
  • Provide a nursing head-to-toe assessment within 24 hours upon admission.
  • Identify health medical and/or mental health risk factors.
  • Provide basic healthcare to students in case of injury or acute illness.
  • Administer medication on a daily basis.
  • Promote positive health behaviors and self-care skills by educating students and staff.
  • Keep track of minors' medical records and communicate with external medical providers.
  • Ensure compliance with national and local health laws and program requirements.
  • Serve as CPR instructor and workers' compensation point person.
  • Provide 'on-call' services and direct care as required.
  • Make appropriate recommendations to other healthcare professionals.
  • Elevate cases to the Division of Health for Unaccompanied Children when needed.

Requirements

  • Completion of accredited RN program and current Connecticut state licensure.
  • Minimum one (1) year of relevant nursing experience with children or adolescents in a residential or inpatient setting.
  • Must be bilingual (English/Spanish).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Fully immunized/vaccinated for Varicella, MMR, TdAp, Influenza or have a medical/religious exemption.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a shelter program for unaccompanied children.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care practices.
