About the position

The Benefits Specialist at the University of Maine System is responsible for coordinating and administering employee and retiree benefits, ensuring compliance with various regulations and policies. This role involves working with sensitive data and requires strong decision-making skills to navigate complex benefit plans and regulations. The position is based on the Bangor campus with the possibility of remote work for suitable candidates.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and administer employee benefits and retiree benefits activities.
  • Ensure compliance with UMS policies, federal and state leave regulations, and union contracts.
  • Manage and resolve complex data, file integration, and record-keeping issues related to benefits.
  • Provide professional support and guidance on benefits-related inquiries.
  • Maintain confidentiality while handling sensitive and proprietary information.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of retirement plans, health and wellness benefits, and retiree health/Medicare.
  • Understanding of federal and state regulations affecting leave programs, including FMLA and ADA.
  • Ability to make informed decisions considering compliance impacts.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for effective communication with various stakeholders.

Nice-to-haves

  • Five years' experience in employee benefits administration.
  • Experience in higher education with multiple unions.
  • Experience dealing with sensitive financial, health, and disability issues.
