About the position

The Behavioral Health Consultant position within the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa focuses on program development, assessment, and treatment for individuals with complex mental illnesses and severe challenging behaviors. The role involves collaboration with an interdisciplinary team to implement behavior treatment, manage patient information, and ensure quality program delivery in a supportive and innovative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts behavioral assessments under the guidance of the clinical director.
  • Actively involved in implementing behavior treatment on the unit and coaching staff.
  • Manages patient information, including writing daily progress notes and creating/updating patient graphs.
  • Identifies behavior goals for hospitalization and assists the team in developing behavior programming and data collection.
  • Reviews assessment data with psychologists and develops additional assessment and treatment plans.
  • Coordinates behavior programming with interdisciplinary team members and provides training for staff as appropriate.
  • Completes literature reviews and continuing education in applied behavior analysis, dialectical behavior therapy, and other relevant topics.
  • Assures quality in program delivery through collaboration with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Communicates with internal and external stakeholders regarding patient goals, progress, behavior recommendations, and placement.
  • Assists in discharge planning.
  • Assists in creating training materials and conducting training as appropriate, including follow-up with care providers after discharge.
  • Assists in writing reports, including treatment recommendations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, education, or related field.
  • Three or more years of direct experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities and severe challenging behaviors.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including demonstrated positive interpersonal skills and experience leading or participating as a member of work teams and groups.
  • Proficiency in computer software applications, including experience using email, spreadsheets, and word processing programs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Applied Behavior Analysis and treatment with individuals with developmental disabilities and/or challenging behavior.
  • Experience in an inpatient psychiatric setting.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of University policies, procedures, and regulations.
