About The Position

The Behavior Specialist is responsible for behavioral assessments, functional analyses, behavior program design and development (based upon ABA principles), data tracking and analyses, and ongoing monitoring of programs for individual youth. Development and implementation of staff training procedures on a regular basis is expected, as is participation in multidisciplinary team meetings. The goal is to be able to work direct with the youth, and assist the staff who work with the youth in using appropriate behavioral and clinical techniques so that children may achieve targeted objectives and grow towards reaching their highest potential in maladaptive behavior reduction while simultaneously increasing functional skills.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in Master’s level courses with the intent to earn a Master’s degree in Behavior Analysis and Therapy.
  • Experience and/or specialized knowledge in one or more of the following: Developmental Disabilities; Autism Spectrum Disorders; Cognitive Impairment.
  • Knowledge of psychopharmacology and/or Mental Health issues is helpful.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively (both written and orally) in a professional manner with all levels of employees.
  • Ability to interact effectively on a multidisciplinary team.
  • Successful background clearance, physical, and drug/alcohol screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with individuals who have developmental disabilities, cognitive impairment, and autism.
  • Experience in functional assessments/analyses, behavior program development/monitoring, and competency-based staff training procedures in program implementation, discrete trial training, functional communication training, prompting, prompt fading, differential reinforcement, and crisis intervention strategies.
  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) eligibility.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct functional analyses (Level I and Level II) to identify motivation for maladaptive behaviors, and assist in Level III Analogue Analysis under supervision.
  • Design and implement data collection systems using various methods (e.g., partial interval time sampling, cumulative frequencies) to quantify behavior data.
  • Analyze program and baseline data to identify levels, trends, variability, and functional relationships.
  • Design behavior support plans (BSPs), including formal and informal plans, based on functional analysis and data analysis.
  • Develop positive interventions for teaching adaptive behaviors, including task analysis, reinforcer identification, prompting, reinforcement schedules, generalization procedures, and data collection systems.
  • Design response reduction interventions using least intrusive techniques, based on functional analysis, data collection, and concurrent positive interventions.
  • Implement interventions and train staff on how to conduct planned interventions and collect appropriate data, including return demonstrations.
  • Develop and implement orientation training for new staff on basic ABA concepts, Autism, and related topics.
  • Collaborate with Educational Staff at The Hope Institute and community schools to ensure training and implementation of behavior support strategies in classrooms.
  • Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, including IEPs, admission screenings, and the Behavior Intervention Committee.
  • Provide ongoing input into long-range plans for Behavioral Health Services and the department's role.
  • Participate in continuing education and professional development through workshops, conferences, professional organizations, publishing research, and presentations.
  • Establish personal goals for professional growth, participate in problem-solving, provide solution-oriented recommendations, maintain respectful interactions, communicate clearly, and practice in accordance with APA ethical standards.
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable DCFS and DHS regulations and licensure requirements.
  • Become eligible to sit for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst exam within 36 months of hire.
  • Act as a mandated reporter for incidents of alleged abuse/neglect of students.
  • Ensure compliance with student rights and program delivery as defined by Illinois Department of Mental Health Code, Confidentiality Act, and Child Care Act.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
