About the position

The position involves following general direction and performing various duties as assigned by the Site Director. The primary focus is to ensure that the individual needs of children are met within the program guidelines while maintaining a safe and supportive environment. The role requires utilizing sound judgment and discretionary skills in accordance with the Gateway Region YMCA policies, and maintaining positive relationships with diverse individuals including staff, parents, volunteers, and program site administration. The position also emphasizes the importance of following YMCA policies and guidelines at all times, planning and implementing developmentally appropriate activities, and ensuring that all children, including those requiring support, are fully included in site activities. Additionally, the role involves providing children with opportunities to build self-help and independence skills, ensuring a zero tolerance for abuse, and actively participating in the protection of youth and teens.

Responsibilities

  • Follow general direction and perform other duties as assigned by the Site Director
  • Ensure the individual needs of the children are met within the program guidelines
  • Utilize sound judgment and discretionary skills in accordance with the Gateway Region YMCA policies
  • Maintain positive relationships with diverse people, including staff, parents, volunteers, and program site administration
  • Ensure YMCA policies and guidelines are followed at all times
  • Maintain an environment that ensures children's safety and well-being
  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities
  • Serve as support staff based on needs of program participants, ensuring approved levels of support, assistance, and record keeping
  • Ensure child-receiving support is fully included in all site activities based on documented ability
  • Provide children opportunities to build self-help and independence skills
  • Ensure zero tolerance for abuse and actively participate in the protection of youth and teens
  • Perform all other duties assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be 17 years of age for sites with 16 or less children (will work alongside a licensed approved 18+ staff member)
  • Must be 18 years of age for sites with more than 16 children
  • At least 1 year of experience working with children
  • Ability to relate to children, parents, staff members, and volunteers
  • Follow directions, have strong leadership skills, and be self-motivated
