About the position
The Bankhead Burn Crew Member (BBCM) plays a crucial role in wildland fire activities within the Bankhead National Forest in Northwest Alabama. Working as part of a squad under the direction of a Burn Boss, the BBCM is responsible for preparing fire lines, maintaining equipment, and conducting post-burn monitoring. This position also involves performing other forest management duties when conditions are not suitable for prescribed fire. The BBCM will engage in ongoing professional development to enhance skills and maintain fire certification credentials, while also building relationships within the professional fire community and local community.
Responsibilities
- Participate in wildland fire activities as directed by a Burn Boss.
- Prepare fire lines and maintain equipment.
- Conduct post-burn monitoring and other forest management duties.
- Stay updated on new burn techniques and equipment.
- Build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- 6 months of related experience.
- Qualified as a Fire Fighter Type 1 (FFT1) with required training courses completed.
- Ability to achieve physical fitness standards as determined by the local Fire Program Manager.
- Experience operating various types of equipment.
Nice-to-haves
- 1 year of training in fire operations or a science-related field.
- Qualified Fire Fighter Type 1 (Squad Boss) with successful completion of FFT1 task book.
- Current Red Card certification.
- Experience operating and maintaining 4x4 trucks, ATV/UTVs, and trailering.
