About the position

The position requires a Valid Automotive Service Excellence Certification in either Automotive and Light Truck or Medium Heavy Truck. Under general supervision, the role involves performing advanced mechanical work on various vehicles and equipment, including trucks, tractors, and other machinery. Responsibilities include troubleshooting diagnostics, performing repairs, and conducting maintenance tasks on city vehicles and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain city vehicles using computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Perform basic maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tune-ups, and tire rotations.
  • Disassemble and reassemble parts as needed; dismantle and remove defective components.
  • Utilize testing equipment to ensure repairs and maintenance are effective.
  • Repair and service a variety of vehicles including trucks, motorcycles, and heavy-duty equipment.
  • Utilize common hand tools for repairs and adjustments.
  • Perform major and minor repairs to heavy-duty diesel engines and other specialized components.
  • Maintain air conditioning and heating units, door controls, and other vehicle systems.
  • Use welding equipment to cut, braze, and weld parts as required.
  • Perform minor body work on vehicles.
  • Keep records of work performed and materials used.
  • Instruct and oversee apprentices and helpers.
  • Repair and service mobile and portable equipment and tools.
  • Operate tow trucks to service and retrieve disabled vehicles.
  • Shift and drive vehicles on department premises.
  • Operate heavy equipment and special tools for tire mounting and dismounting.

Requirements

  • High School graduation or G.E.D.
  • Completion of two years in a trade or vocational high school with courses in automotive repair.
  • Three years of experience in repairing gasoline and/or diesel vehicles or completion of a four-year apprenticeship in automotive repair.
  • Valid State of Michigan Operator License.
  • Valid Automotive Service Excellence Certification in required areas.
  • Ability to obtain additional certifications within six months of hire.
  • Must meet physical standards prescribed by the Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division.
  • Possess a valid current Medical Examiner's Certificate for driving.
  • Provide commonly used tools for automotive repair work.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in repairing construction, maintenance, or special purpose vehicles.
  • Possession of a State of Michigan Driver or Chauffeur License with Group A Commercial Driver License endorsement.
