About the position

HDR is seeking engineering students for a summer immersion program focused on Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Human Machine Interface (HMI) programming. The role involves hands-on programming tasks to support large projects within the Building Engineering Services (BES) team in Denver. The position emphasizes learning proper programming techniques and styles, with a focus on safety and process control. Programmers will work under the guidance of senior engineers and will be involved in various engineering tasks, including programming, preparation of electrical diagrams, and testing in HDR's Operational Technology lab.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hands-on PLC and HMI programming tasks to support large programming projects.
  • Work as part of the Building Engineering Services (BES) team in Denver.
  • Learn and apply proper programming techniques and styles for automation equipment.
  • Take direction on programming for safe process control.
  • Prepare electrical diagrams, system block diagrams, and other engineering documentation.
  • Test programs in HDR's Operational Technology lab and demonstrate features to HDR personnel and possibly customers.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Engineering program.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Possess strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant in the employee-owned culture.

Nice-to-haves

  • Desire to learn industrial controls and programming techniques and practices.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Programming knowledge to understand program structures, number systems, and Boolean logic.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Color acuity (cannot be color blind).
  • ACAD proficiency is a plus.
  • IT experience or knowledge is a plus.
  • Ethernet networking understanding and experience is a plus.
