About The Position

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has an opening for a temporary full-time Auto Service Technician in the Public Works division. This temporary full-time opportunity is for a period up to May 2027. Preference given to current CUPE 12.1 members. The Auto Service Technician is responsible for repairing and maintaining a variety of municipally owned vehicles and equipment.

Requirements

  • Possession of 310T (Truck and Coach) license is preferred
  • Possession of 310S (Automobile) license is an asset
  • Currently working for the last 5 years as a 310T technician, or those with relevant 310 experience are encouraged to apply for consideration.
  • Experience using specialized diagnostic equipment required (i.e. Navistar Engine Diagnostics, Diamond Logic Builder, Prolink, Service Maxx, Michell Heavy & Light Duty, Bendix, WABCO)
  • Experience working with schematic diagrams
  • Excellent fabrication welding skills using MIG, STICK and Oxy-Acetylene
  • Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) (or similar software programs)
  • Valid class DZ (or higher) Ontario driver’s licence
  • An acceptable driver’s abstract will: be an original document and current (within the previous thirty (30) days); have no more than four (4) demerit points; have no more than two (2) convictions for the same offence; have no criminal code convictions; have no ‘non-medical or administrative’ license suspension in the preceding three (3) years.
  • Successful candidates will be required to complete a background check prior to commencement of employment. A background check may include the following: education/certification verification and employment reference check.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
  • Work in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment
  • Diagnose, repair, service and inspect faults to all types of vehicles and equipment’s within municipal fleet. This includes and is not limited to gas and diesel engines, drivetrains, hydraulics, electrical, electronic and various other components
  • Required to check completed work to ensure satisfactory operation
  • Work on roadside to inspect, diagnose and repair
  • Perform Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) Inspection and issue Safety Certificates. This includes performing associated repairs in compliance with the regulatory standards and signing the appropriate forms and reports prescribed as authorization and validation of the work completed
  • Work using service manuals (hardcopy and electronic), technical reference materials, manufacturer specifications and schematic diagrams
  • Operate all types of vehicles and equipment in and out of work areas
  • Estimate parts and labour costs for repairs
  • Provide mechanical and operational analyses of new proposed equipment acquisitions
  • Prepare/maintain written work records such as time sheets, parts distribution from inventory, inspection sheets and preventive maintenance records
  • Conduct research of equipment, vehicles, parts, warranties, etc.
  • Coach and instruct apprentices and/or students
  • Maintain a tidy and clean workspace
  • Take responsibility of toolbox and tools provided by the municipality.
  • Ensure that all necessary personal protective equipment (e.g. safety boots, hearing protection, eye protection, etc.) is used and is maintained in good condition
  • Participate in equipment/vehicle demonstrations and road testing, for which an Ontario Class "DZ" Licence is required
