About the position

The Authorization Specialist is responsible for the verification of insurance eligibility, management of insurance authorizations for patients, and scheduling/administrative responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provides office support by answering phones in a timely fashion, greeting patients, visitors and vendors responding to inquiries, complaints, concerns and requests transmitting information to appropriate staff members as necessary.
  • Notifies appropriate office staff and patient of insurance benefits, criteria and coverage.
  • Prepares records for medical record requests.
  • Ensures that all initial consult paperwork has been done.
  • Contacts patients prior to initial evaluation and conducts patient appointment reminders by telephone.
  • Informs Physician of daily changes in schedule.
  • Facilitates any physician request through the day, i.e., referring patients to another practice, paging any physician requested by the physician in office.
  • Schedules and completes testing order forms for patients and faxes the forms to the appropriate departments.
  • Assists in requesting copies of tests, surgeries, or office notes to be placed in patients' chart.
  • Prepares referral letters and reports.
  • Calls patient if insurance will not allow extended referral authorization; informs patient of financial obligations or reschedules.
  • In the absence of Patient Service Representative, greets patients, schedules appointments for patients and vendors, prepares daily transaction sheets for office manager to review and make bank deposits.
  • Maintains confidentiality and security of all information contained in the medical records in accordance with HIPAA.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • 1 year as a staff technologist working in Women's Imaging and Mammography
  • Must demonstrate patience and good judgement.
  • Must have excellent grammar, effective communication skills, and present a professional image.
  • Must have working knowledge of health insurance and be comfortable with navigating coverage sites.
  • Knowledge of EMR system preferred.
