About the position

All Athletic Coach hires and work schedules for the school year are contingent upon student enrollment, sports sign ups, and sports schedules developed for the season.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct and coach students in the sport indicated.
  • Help arrange playing schedules.
  • Perform/assist in all coaching responsibilities associated with the position.
  • Attend all required meetings and trainings as specified by OAL.

Requirements

  • Must meet all qualifications listed in the job description.
  • Preference for current certificated employees of Oakland Unified School District with a valid CA teaching credential.
  • Certifications required: Injury prevention/treatment, Valid CPR card, Valid First Aid card, proof of completing a college-level course in care/prevention of athletic injuries, valid EMT I or II card, or a valid Sports Injury Certificate.
  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest certification.
  • Concussion certification.
  • Heat illness prevention certification.
  • Fundamentals of coaching training (high school) or Coaching Essentials training (middle school).
  • COVID Safety certification.
  • Written evidence of knowledge of coaching theory and techniques in the sport, which may include college coursework, prior coaching experience, or prior participation in the sport at the high school level.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of the sport at the high school level.
  • Knowledge of adolescent psychology as it relates to sports participation, fulfilled by college courses or prior involvement with youth in sports programs.
  • Ability to maintain high standards of safety in coaching practices and contests.
  • Demonstrated high ethical standards related to sportsmanship and relationships with students.
  • Ability to communicate with parents/guardians and school staff regarding problems or emergencies during sporting events.
  • Knowledge of school policies and California Interscholastic Federation (C.I.F.) policies related to athletics.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous successful experiences coaching the sport at the level of the vacancy.
