About the position

The Assistant Manager for Dining Services at Harvard University plays a crucial role in overseeing the operational management of a retail food service unit. This position involves leading a team of service staff, ensuring compliance with food safety regulations, and delivering exceptional customer service. The Assistant Manager will also be responsible for managing catered events, maintaining inventory levels, and fostering a positive work environment while upholding the university's mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in leading a team of non-exempt service staff in the overall management of a retail unit.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety rules and customer service expectations.
  • Implement and monitor the FoodPro menu and inventory management system.
  • Solicit, sell, plan, and execute catered events.
  • Maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure kitchen equipment is operational and alert the Unit Manager of needed repairs.
  • Maintain the physical plant of the unit in good repair.
  • Ensure sustainability goals and programs are followed.
  • Learn all aspects of the retail unit including cash handling and micros.
  • Provide leadership and direction to a diverse team of unionized staff.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with service staff and Union Shop Stewards.
  • Interview candidates and ensure compliance with employment practices.
  • Maintain the Kronos timekeeping system and process timecards.

Requirements

  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Hospitality Management or related field, or 2-3 years of related foodservice management experience.
  • Previous financial and human resource management experience in a food industry environment.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new systems and applications.
  • Experience with the sale and execution of catered events.
  • Experience managing in a unionized environment.
  • Knowledge of Kronos timekeeping software or similar system.
  • Knowledge of FoodPro Menu Management system.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver exceptional customer service.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with a diverse constituency.
  • Strong time management, organizational, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to meet multiple deadlines and manage competing priorities.
  • Good professional judgment and ability to independently make sound business decisions.
  • Ability to become ServSafe Certified within six months of employment.
