About the position

The Associate Vice President for Research Advancement, Senior Advisor to VPRI, will lead the research advancement team at the University of Minnesota, overseeing various grant programs and strategic initiatives. This role involves advising the Vice President for Research and Innovation (VPRI) on research advancement, managing partnerships, and developing research teams to align with emerging trends and funding opportunities. The AVP will also be responsible for institutional reporting, strategy development, and enhancing the visibility of the university's research achievements.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the RIO Research Advancement team, overseeing multiple seed grant programs and matching funds for federal awards.
  • Serve as a close advisor to the VPRI on research advancement and strategic initiatives.
  • Identify emerging research trends and funding opportunities, developing reports and recommendations for the VPRI.
  • Assist in implementing policies and regulatory changes to ensure compliance within the research enterprise.
  • Manage the RIO Advisory Board meetings and serve as the primary contact for board members.
  • Develop data-driven insights to assess and improve research advancement efforts.
  • Serve as the senior analyst for institutional research reporting and strategic performance.
  • Collaborate with external affairs to highlight research successes and increase visibility.
  • Attend departmental faculty meetings to engage in discussions related to research support needs.
  • Host delegations from industry and federal agencies to develop collaborations.

Requirements

  • PhD degree or other doctoral degree.
  • 10 or more years of professional experience in research advancement activities or leadership roles in higher education.
  • Established track record of conducting independent research and securing research grants.
  • Deep understanding of federal, state, and private funding sources and trends in emerging research areas.
  • Expertise in reviewing and providing feedback on research grants.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex data sets related to institutional performance metrics.
  • Experience supervising and developing staff.
  • Comfort with public speaking and representing the university's research mission.
  • Ability to communicate research goals and successes to stakeholders.
  • Experience working with diverse internal stakeholders to support research initiatives.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with undergraduate research and workforce training initiatives.
  • Familiarity with the Research 2030 plan and Innovation Minnesota Council recommendations.
