About the position

WSP USA is seeking an Associate Track Design Engineer to join our National Transit & Rail Business Line! This position may reside out of any mutually agreed upon WSP USA East Coast Office. The ideal candidate will provide design services for a variety of transit and freight rail clients. The design tasks will range from new track alignments to rehabilitation projects, special trackwork design and grade crossing design.

Responsibilities

  • Development and production of engineering drawings using Bentley OpenRail and Autocad Civil 3D software.
  • Inspection and condition assessment of new and in-service track on railroad property.
  • Writing and compiling technical specifications.
  • Preparing and checking design calculations.
  • Research into technical topics regarding materials and methods used in track construction.
  • Write technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using sketches, calculations, electronic systems, spreadsheets, and software.
  • Present the design to both internal and external clients.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers, planners, scientific professionals, and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant post education experience.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles, practices, process, design/build on major infrastructure projects, particularly railway civil works, transit stations, bridges, and elevated structures.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including rehabilitation and new design.
  • Familiarity with track, station, layover facility, and general civil engineering.
  • Highly familiar with relevant FRA, FTA, CPUC, AREMA, and other rail regulatory standards and procedures, codes, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Analytical mindset with an ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to present to internal and external clients.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, OpenRail).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
