About the position

The Staff/Sr. Staff Attorney is an in-house, fully remote position that will handle a designated caseload of Workers’ Compensation cases appearances before the California Workers' Compensation Boards in Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles, Van Nuys, and Oxnard. This position will be part of a collaborative learning environment offering remote work and onsite appearances in partnership with our Attorney Staff (approximately 4X annually). Responsibilities

  • Analyze complex and factual issues, conduct extensive and develop well-reasoned legal research.
  • Independently create and present defense strategies on behalf of clients.
  • Prepare complex pleadings, written discovery, depositions, petitions for reconsideration, trial briefs in support of defense strategies with Autonomy.
  • Partner with our Claims Partners to achieve the best results for our Hartford insured.
  • Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice and other services to clients on legal and factual issues.
  • Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel and co-counsel with professional diplomacy and discretion.
  • Facilitate prompt, efficient and effective disposition of assigned cases.
  • Independently prepare and present witnesses and evidence at trials, judicial/administrative hearings, arbitrations and alternative dispute resolutions.
  • Research, draft, file and argue appellate briefs in reviewing courts on behalf of clients.
  • Participate in Team Huddles.
  • Provide in-house training to junior associates and/or claims partners.
  • Participate in claims file reviews.
  • Attend continuing legal education seminars in order to maintain high level of professional expertise.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) from accredited law school and licensed to practice in the state of California, in good standing.
  • Legal Internship or Law Clerk experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the tripartite relationship is a plus.
  • Commitment to providing a high level of customer service.
  • Positive minded and collaborative team-player attitude.
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills.
  • Strong MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook).
  • Effective communicator with strong negotiation skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and desire to be challenged.

Nice-to-haves

  • Minimum of 2 years of Legal practice experience handling complex Workers’ Compensation cases.
  • Trial experience preferred.
  • Lexis Nexis experience is a plus.
  • Self-directed with excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software as required.
