About the position

Big Bend Community College (BBCC), a rural college serving vibrant, culturally rich communities in the Columbia Basin of Central Washington invites applications for a Instructor in the college's English Department. We seek candidates with the ability to teach face-to-face classes on the Big Bend Community College campus. This position is responsible to prepare and teach English Composition I and Composition II courses, as needed. To work at BBCC you will be participating in a movement. Responsibilities

  • Prepare and teach assigned courses in accordance with the Master Course Outline and in consultation with a full-time faculty member.
  • Utilize best practices for teaching English composition, engaging and motivating students to succeed.
  • Meet the class times as required by the quarterly schedule and assist students as needed with questions related to the course(s) being taught.
  • Utilize Canvas, the learning management system at BBCC, to provide students access to course material and the course gradebook.
  • Support students' academic success by maintaining regular office hour(s). Refer students to appropriate college resources as needed.
  • Foster a flexible, healthy learning environment with respect for student diversity.
  • Maintain positive and effective communications with students.
  • Maintain and submit grades and attendance reports to college personnel when required. Post syllabi quarterly to the BBCC Portal for each course taught.
  • Maintain student course materials for two (2) quarters beyond the quarter of attendance.
  • Submit assessment data in consultation with a full-time faculty member in the department.
  • Assist with development, selection, and/or recommend selection of instructional materials for course(s) being taught.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in English or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to individuals from diverse academic, age, socioeconomic, cultural, ability, and ethnic backgrounds.

Nice-to-haves

  • Relevant teaching experience at the post-secondary level within the last five (5) years.
  • Experience implementing strategies to improve student success and retention.
  • Experience with online learning, hybrid courses, learning management systems (LMS), video conferencing and other applications for instructional purposes such as Word, PowerPoint/Canva, and Excel.
  • Ability to teach face-to-face classes on the Big Bend Community College campus.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency.
  • Bicultural experience.
