About the position

WSP USA is seeking multiple Associate Consultants, Ports and Marine Engineering to join our National Maritime Practice Group. This position can be based out of the following offices: Irvine+San Francisco-CA, Miami-FL, New York City-NY, Portland-OR, Seattle-WA, Houston-TX, Tampa-FL. Provides engineering support to other technical staff, engineers, and project managers for the development, design, construction, and or inspection of structures and facilities for port, marine, and intermodal rail terminal projects in the public and private sector; these facilities may include piers, wharves, port and upland marine terminals, seawalls, dry docks, marinas and other nearshore/offshore facilities. Delivers work products at a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for engineering tasks including collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, survey data, technical reports and drawings, and or other data matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Apply higher-order engineering techniques/practices to develop project design requirements, while incorporating marine-practice engineering standards and specifications.
  • Lead development of construction plans and schedules, specifications, and cost estimates for ports and marine projects.
  • Prepare and implement site safety activity plans and coordinate field work activities.
  • Oversee cross-functional teams to execute project work on a mid-level project and/or multiple concurrent smaller projects.
  • Write technical reports, generating complete and concise documentation of findings, using sketches, calculations, excel spreadsheets, technical drawings, and other engineering software.
  • Prepare and give presentations to communicate findings and recommendations to internal and external team members as well as clients.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Complete all assigned trainings.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, from ABET accredited program;
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline with demonstration of marine and coastal design experience (including rehabilitation and new design).
  • Demonstrated ability to complete technical computations/calculations, involving the application of engineering principles to ports and marine structures.
  • Highly proficient in technical writing, engineering software and tools, and engineering fundamentals including statics and logical problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated ability with AutoCAD and SAP2000 and similar tools.
  • Demonstrated ability in design/build processes.
  • Familiarity with building and infrastructure planning, design, and construction management.
  • Ability to plan, conduct and lead site inspections/ investigations on various aspects of the construction and design of facilities, per applicable regulations and policies.
  • Demonstrated self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Demonstrated team leadership, including coordinating/directing subconsultants, to consistently complete tasks safely while arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and the ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from ABET accredited program.
  • EIT OR Professional Engineering license
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline with demonstration of marine and coastal design experience (including rehabilitation and new design).
  • Demonstrated experience with REVIT and other related BIM tools.
  • Demonstrated experience with LSDYNA and or other related engineering software.
  • Member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
  • Experience with marine, port, and coastal construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
