About the position

The Assistive Technology Specialist Trainee position is designed for individuals who will work within the Personal Adjustment Training Unit of the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. This role focuses on training individuals with severe visual and/or other disabilities in the use of assistive technologies, including computer and phone applications. The trainee will conduct individualized assessments, develop instructional plans, and provide training to enhance the skills necessary for independent living and employment. This position is intended to transition into a Training Specialist III role within five years, contingent upon meeting performance standards and obtaining the required certification.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct individualized interviews with clients to assess their assistive technology training needs.
  • Monitor client performance, satisfaction, progress, and outcomes.
  • Formulate instructional plans and provide appropriate training to meet client needs.
  • Implement pre-developed course materials and training concepts for computer training.
  • Collaborate with team members to address advanced individualized training needs.
  • Utilize specialized software and hardware for individuals who are blind or visually impaired, including JAWS, ZoomText, and VoiceOver.
  • Prepare written reports with recommendations for training programs and needs.
  • Document client performance in relation to established vocational plans.
  • Evaluate teaching needs in various settings and modify training as necessary.
  • Facilitate empowerment and adjustment counseling for clients and their families.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Assistive Technology, Teacher of the Visually Impaired, Vision Rehabilitation Therapy, Orientation and Mobility, Special Education, or a closely related field.
  • One year of professional experience providing services to blind and low vision individuals in assistive technology.
  • Ability to instruct techniques for integrating assistive technology into daily activities.
  • Proficiency in Windows and basic to intermediate screen reader skills, including JAWS and VoiceOver.

Nice-to-haves

  • Technical training in Assistive Technology for individuals who are blind/visually impaired.
  • Experience in vocational counseling or academic advisement for blind and low vision individuals.
  • Ability to create tailored training plans based on individual needs and learning styles.
