About the position

The Assistive Technology Specialist is a part-time, grant-funded role at Mohawk Valley Community College, focused on providing assistive technology and accommodation support to students with disabilities. This position is essential in ensuring that students have access to the necessary resources to succeed academically, promoting an inclusive educational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and monitors online student files and office records.
  • Responds to student inquiries and provides communication about services.
  • Occasionally assists with planning and coordinating special events related to accessibility resources.
  • Orders and creates electronic and other alternate format materials.
  • Tracks orders and maintains inventory of assistive technology.
  • Educates students about their learning needs and provides training on assistive technology, especially for first-time students.
  • Maintains confidential student records.
  • Develops and implements appropriate educational programs, workshops, and in-service trainings for students, faculty, and staff on Universal Designed Learning (UDL) principles and assistive technology.
  • Assesses the need and selects, recommends purchases, installs, and trains on assistive technologies.
  • Develops individualized learning strategies and implements skill-building programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of OAR, or the Director of SAW.

Requirements

  • Associate degree (or 60 credit hours completed) in computer sciences, information technology, communication, or a related field.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience with assistive technology or with people with disabilities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral, for conveying technical information clearly to non-technical audiences.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience using assistive technologies, such as screen readers (JAWS, NVDA), voice recognition software, and experience with keyboard navigation for accessibility.
