About the position

The Assistive Technology Instructor for the Blind at Valley Center for the Blind is responsible for providing training and support to individuals with vision loss, helping them develop essential skills for independence and employment. The instructor will conduct assessments, maintain proficiency in assistive technology, and create personalized training plans tailored to each client's needs. This role requires strong communication skills and a commitment to the organization's mission of empowering individuals with visual impairments.

Responsibilities

  • Determine current skill level, training needs, and appropriate equipment recommendations through a detailed assessment process.
  • Maintain proficiency in the use of adaptive/assistive technology devices for the blind and visually impaired.
  • Work with clients to develop goals that enhance independence and confidence.
  • Maintain a safe and fun learning environment for all clients.
  • Develop personalized training plans tailored to meet a client's needs in conjunction with VCB curriculum.
  • Maintain thorough and timely ongoing record keeping of client services.
  • Stay knowledgeable about existing and new low vision aids and assistive software.
  • Keep up to date on new trends and suggest appropriate curriculum updates.
  • Present client issues to VCB's Case Management team and contribute to ongoing problem solving.
  • Participate in individual case conferences and confer regularly with program staff.
  • Work assigned hours, typically between 8:00am to 6:00pm, five days a week.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Utilize prescribed software to document and track customer data.
  • Contribute to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the department by performing all other duties as assigned.
  • Possess working knowledge of computers, primarily Microsoft Office applications.

Requirements

  • Degree in Rehabilitation Teaching or Assistive Technology teaching certification with a minimum of two years work experience; or a degree in Education or a related field with a minimum of three years work experience; or five or more years of work experience in blindness skills training and education.
  • Excellent professional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and dependable with the ability to take initiative and maintain organization.
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and assistive technology software such as Voiceover, JAWS, ZoomText, and NVDA.
  • Experience teaching using non-visual techniques and understanding of blindness and additional disabilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • JAWS Certification preferred.
