About the position

The University of South Dakota is seeking an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Ethics for a tenure-track position within the Department of History. This role focuses on teaching and developing courses in biomedical ethics, engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration, and contributing to the university's research initiatives. The successful candidate will be involved in both undergraduate and graduate education, with a teaching load of 3-2, and will have the opportunity to work with the South Dakota Biomedical Computation Collaborative (SDBCC).

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in ethics, including biomedical ethics and electives, both in-person and online.
  • Develop and teach a graduate course in biomedical ethics for students from various STEM disciplines.
  • Serve on graduate committees and University Honors thesis committees.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Develop a research program that leads to peer-reviewed publications.
  • Participate in department, college, and university service, as well as professional service and outreach activities.
  • Actively engage with the SDBCC and collaborate with members across different fields and institutions.

Requirements

  • PhD in Philosophy or a related field by the first day of employment (August 2025).
  • Ability or potential to teach introductory, advanced undergraduate, and graduate courses in philosophy and biomedical ethics.
  • Knowledge in clinical ethics, AI ethics, and/or data ethics preferred but not required.
  • Ability or potential to participate in and lead interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Ability or potential to develop an independent research program.
  • Ability or potential to publish original research in peer-reviewed venues.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge in areas related to clinical ethics, AI ethics, and/or data ethics.
