About the position

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Cultures, specializing in the history, languages/literary traditions, and religions of ancient Iran. This position is set to begin on July 1, 2025, and is aimed at junior scholars with a focus on research and teaching that spans the first millennium BCE to the end of late antiquity. The role emphasizes a diachronic approach and encourages engagement with broader cultural and intellectual traditions, including the Ancient Near East, the Classical World, and Central Asia.

Responsibilities

  • Teach and develop a variety of classes, including general education courses and graduate seminars in ancient Iranian history, philology, and religions.
  • Contribute actively to the research and work of the Pourdavoud Institute for the Iranian World.
  • Participate in UCLA Global Antiquity and establish links with colleagues working on ancient studies at UCLA.
  • Engage in broad community outreach in Los Angeles and beyond.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in hand by June 30, 2025.
  • Research and teaching interests in the history, languages/literary traditions, and religions of ancient Iran.
