About the position

Black Hills State University (BHSU) is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Genetics or Genomics, starting August 2025. The role emphasizes experiential learning and focuses on serving undergraduate and Master's students. The successful candidate will engage in teaching, research, and community involvement, contributing to the diverse academic environment of the School of Natural Sciences.

Responsibilities

• Develop and teach genetics and genomics courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Establish a research program that engages undergraduate and graduate students.
• Mentor undergraduate and graduate research.
• Participate in student advising.
• Engage in activities that serve the School of Natural Sciences, the University, and the broader community.

Requirements

• PhD in genetics, genomics, molecular biology, or a related field (ABD candidates near graduation will be considered).
• Strong collegial and collaborative skills.
• Interest in employing evidence-based teaching strategies.
• Strong interest in mentoring student research.
• Potential to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and enthusiasm for community service.
• Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

• Knowledge/experience in population or functional genetics/genomics.
• Experience teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
• Experience with analysis of NGS datasets.
• A record of successful publication of research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
• Experience in grant writing.
