About The Position

This is an equipment-first leadership role for individuals who are experienced equipment operators ready to take on more responsibility or working leads who still wish to operate equipment. The role involves a significant amount of time operating machinery such as loaders, excavators, screening equipment, and grinders, managing production flow from raw yard waste to finished product. Additionally, the position requires leading a small crew, collaborating with the Site Manager, and ensuring the efficient operation of the yard. The job emphasizes a hands-on approach, quality product creation, safe work practices, and solid customer service within a recycling green waste and producing compost and soil products operation that has been serving the Skagit Valley for over 30 years.

Requirements

  • Proven experience operating loaders and excavators.
  • Comfortable working outside year-round in a fast-moving production yard.
  • Ability to lead by doing, step up, take ownership, and set the standard.
  • Interest in growing into a Site Manager or Operations leadership role.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with trommel or deck screeners and grinding equipment.
  • Background in composting, soils, landscaping materials, recycling, or similar operations.
  • Understanding of how material behaves through the process (wet vs. dry, finished vs. raw, contaminated vs. clean).

Responsibilities

  • Operating loaders to feed grinders and screeners, blend materials, build and turn windrows, and stage stockpiles.
  • Using excavators for material handling, digging, pile management, and yard reconfiguration.
  • Operating trommel and deck screeners, understanding screen size effects, adjusting feed rates, and managing overs and reprocessing.
  • Feeding grinders correctly, monitoring for contamination, and coordinating grind size.
  • Performing daily equipment walkarounds and maintenance, identifying and flagging problems early, and working safely around others.
  • Managing compost and soil production from inbound yard waste to finished product, including building and turning windrows with attention to moisture, temperature, oxygen, and contamination, and blending soils and compost to specification.
  • Leading a crew of 6-7 employees, setting the daily pace, adjusting to changes, training new hires on equipment and safety, and acting as site lead when the manager is out.
  • Ensuring safety and yard awareness by maintaining safe traffic flow, enforcing good practices, spotting issues, and verifying incoming material acceptance standards.
  • Interacting with customers, assisting with product selection and loading, and covering the scale house when needed.
