About the position

The Assistant General Counsel will play a crucial role in the legal organization of Kapitus, focusing on complex litigation, compliance, and regulatory matters within the financial services sector. This position requires a seasoned attorney with a strong background in legal compliance and the ability to navigate evolving regulatory frameworks. The role involves drafting policies, advising on compliance issues, and engaging with regulators, while also supporting litigation efforts as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Draft, update, and counsel regarding company policies and procedures related to commercial lending and financial services.
  • Research and identify relevant local, state, and federal laws applicable to the company and provide compliance advice.
  • Stay informed of regulatory changes and proactively address compliance matters.
  • Assess risks and collaborate with business units on compliance strategies and process improvements.
  • Assist in the rollout of new products and updates to policies based on regulatory developments.
  • Engage with regulators and trade associations to educate on laws affecting the company.
  • Supervise outside counsel and experts in compliance policy implementation.
  • Develop training materials and present compliance obligations to various departments.
  • Respond to regulatory inquiries, subpoenas, audits, and examinations, supervising a team of paralegals.
  • Provide legal advice on compliance-related matters, including new product launches and financing transactions.
  • Assist with offensive and defensive litigation as needed.

Requirements

  • JD with excellent academic and professional credentials.
  • Member in good standing of the New York, Virginia, or California bar, or eligible for admission upon motion.
  • Minimum four years of experience in complex litigation, investigations, or compliance counseling.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent presentation and training skills.
  • Ability to work independently and adjust to a growing company's needs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Judicial clerkship experience is a plus.
  • Experience in the financial services industry.
