The Assistant Fire Chief – Emergency Services ensures readiness for emergency response by managing all facets of the department’s suppression initiatives and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) response activities. The primary position responsibilities and areas of impact are: Responsible for the management, supervision, and administration of all duty crew firefighters, management of all fire stations, equipment, and apparatus. Responsible for public relations efforts as assigned by the Fire Chief. Leads emergency services efforts within the Fire Department by strategically developing objectives to ensure adequate and trained response to calls Works collaboratively to ensure all suppression, EMS, and special response areas meet or exceed state and federally required standards for their respective positions. Establishes department standards and policies related to the operations areas. Develops and manages annual operation area budget, works collaboratively with Command Staff members on overall department budget, and participates in the capital planning process. Negotiates contracts for related services or materials on behalf of the department. Monitors expenses and looks for opportunities to drive greater cost efficiency. Manages large-scale projects, demonstrating a vision for emergency services. Facilitates internal committees and external groups of stakeholders to arrive at effective outcomes and create engagement in the decision-making process. Supports the training, technology, emergency management, and fire prevention areas through managing projects, achieving goals and driving collaborative communications across the department. Supports special events such as, Night to unite, 4th of July Hometown Celebration, Wings of the North Air Show, Open House, Schooner Days, and other public education/public relations events. Develops and maintains community emergency services relationships throughout the city with private agencies along with federal, state, and local units of government. Assumes command at major fire scenes and directs the response teams. Serves as a liaison between the department and other city leaders during significant incidents. Facilitates significant incident debriefings, identifies areas of improvements and implements subsequent changes. Provides Duty Officer coverage throughout the year. Acts in the absence of the Fire Chief. While these areas are the primary focus of this position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.
