About the position

The Assistant Engineer (Environmental) / Engineer Trainee position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). This role may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, meaning that no examination is required, but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for the title. Employees hired under the NY HELPS program will have their non-competitive status converted to competitive status within a year, allowing them to participate in promotion examinations for which they qualify. The position is with the Division on Air Resources and involves both office and field work. Office responsibilities primarily focus on permit writing, reviewing stack testing results, compliance reports, and developing enforcement cases. Additionally, the role requires the use of computer systems to track activities. Fieldwork includes facility inspections, witnessing stack testing events, and responding to complaints, which may involve navigating difficult terrains such as stairs, ladders, and catwalks. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for explaining and discussing regulatory issues clearly. Candidates must possess a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. The job may require the use of personal protective equipment, including a respirator, and may involve travel, including overnight stays. Overtime may also be required. Responsibilities

  • Write permits and review stack testing results.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology, or proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and one year of full-time engineering experience.
  • Qualifying degrees include Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and others listed in the job description.
  • One year of full-time experience in sanitary, public health, or environmental engineering.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with environmental compliance and regulatory issues.
