About the position

The Assistant Director of Philanthropic Giving at Macalester College is responsible for securing philanthropic support from individual donors, specifically targeting contributions of $50,000 or more. This role involves managing a portfolio of 75-125 alumni and donors, conducting one-on-one visits, and working collaboratively within the Philanthropic Giving team to advance the college's mission through effective donor engagement and relationship management. The position requires regular travel across the United States and aims to generate significant annual revenue through strategic fundraising efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee a regional and local portfolio of ~75-125 constituents, raising philanthropic outright and planned gifts of $50,000 or more.
  • Understand Macalester's programs, aspirations, and strategic priorities, and build and nurture relationships with donors.
  • Implement equitable philanthropic practices, including community-centric fundraising practices, in work with donors.
  • Initiate contact with a portfolio of individual major gift donors and potential donors, qualify philanthropic capacity and affinity, and develop appropriate cultivation strategies.
  • Conduct 100-120 one-on-one visits with donors annually, maintaining stewardship contacts and strengthening relationships.
  • Create, implement, and maintain a custom relationship plan for each qualified donor.
  • Leverage digital relationship management tools in daily work and collaborate with the Planned Giving team as needed.
  • Support key Macalester events and liaise with campus programs and departments to maintain relationships across campus.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of prior experience as a frontline fundraiser or relevant experience in account/relationship management, customer relations, or sales.
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, both written and in person.
  • Comfort with discussing philanthropy and personal financial conversations with individuals.
  • Ability to work confidently in various computer programs, including Google Suite, Excel, and CRM programs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with Slate, The Raiser's Edge, Salesforce, or similar Advancement CRM preferred.
  • Strong writing and editing skills for clear donor communications.
