About the position

The Assistant Controller II at SUNY Broome Community College is responsible for managing and directing the activities related to the general ledger accounting system and associated financial systems. This role involves overseeing financial reporting, analysis, payroll accounting, and compliance with federal and state regulations. The Assistant Controller II also supervises fiscal staff and assists with budget preparation and cash management, ensuring the accuracy of financial data and the implementation of new financial systems.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and direct activities related to the general ledger accounting system and associated integrated payroll, student accounts, fixed asset, purchasing, and accounts payable systems.
  • Oversee stand-alone financial products, financial reporting, financial analysis, payroll accounting functions including Federal & NYS reporting, capital project accounting, and grant accounting.
  • Assist with budget preparation, cash management, internal audit, internal controls and compliance, and establishment of new procedures.
  • Ensure accuracy of financial data and implementation of new financial systems.
  • Supervise fiscal staff, determine work priorities, delegate tasks, train, and evaluate staff work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration is required.
  • Three to five years of accounting experience in a business office, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Two to three years of supervisory experience required.
  • Excellent knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of internal controls and governmental accounting standards preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of Title IV student financial aid accounting principles and procedures is desirable.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local grant funding practices and procedures is preferred.
  • Ability to manage (plan, budget, staff, evaluate) effectively a department with a variety of functions.
