About the position

The Department of Civil Engineering within the Leonard C. Nelson School of Engineering seeks to hire an Assistant / Associate Professor in Civil Engineering. The nine-month contract position is full-time, tenure-track, and benefits-eligible. The successful candidate will be expected to teach basic engineering mechanics courses as well as a variety of civil engineering courses such as Construction Materials, Soil Mechanics and upper-level elective geotechnical engineering courses. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue scholarly activities which may include research opportunities with the West Virginia Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, or similar funding agencies. Other auxiliary duties include those normally associated with a faculty position in an ABET-accredited civil engineering program. Anticipated Start Date: August 15, 2025 or until the position is filled.

Responsibilities

  • Teach basic engineering mechanics courses.
  • Teach a variety of civil engineering courses such as Construction Materials, Soil Mechanics, and upper-level elective geotechnical engineering courses.
  • Pursue scholarly activities and research opportunities.
  • Engage in service to the university and the profession.
  • Develop relationships with the consulting industry and public entities.

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field with an emphasis in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • ABD candidates will be considered with the expectation of completing the doctorate within the first semester of employment.
  • Commitment to teaching excellence and responsiveness to student needs.
  • Good communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Minimum of five years of higher education teaching experience for Associate Professor rank.
