About the position

The Assistant Area Engineer at TxDOT's Liberty Area Office plays a crucial role in managing and supervising various engineering operations, including construction, design, maintenance, and survey activities. This position supports the Area Engineer in ensuring efficient office operations and is responsible for overseeing projects in the absence of the Area Engineer. The role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and effective communication with both internal teams and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Area Engineer in projecting personnel and equipment needed for each project.
  • Respond to emergency situations/conditions to assist with office activities as required.
  • Conduct pre-construction, Employee Forum, and/or safety meetings.
  • Determine quantities and estimate costs for projects.
  • Inspect roads, monitor maintenance activities, and coordinate scheduling of maintenance work with construction projects.
  • Perform research and planning on future projects.
  • Plan and schedule work of construction personnel and provide on-the-job training.
  • Prepare and/or recommend field changes and supplemental agreements.
  • Prepare and/or review monthly and final estimates and final construction reports.
  • Resolve public complaints.
  • Review plans prepared by area office personnel; check designs, specifications, and estimates.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science accepted by TX PELS.
  • 4 years of transportation engineering experience (full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).
  • Valid driver's license required for driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or must obtain a Texas PE license within six months of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in public relations for maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Proficiency in applicable plans, specifications, and estimates preparation.
  • Knowledge of applicable inspection methods, procedures, and techniques.
