About the position

SCAD is seeking a part-time interpreter to join its team in the historic city of Savannah, GA. In this role, the primary responsibility will be to provide communication access for students, faculty, and staff with hearing impairments. This will involve interpreting, oral interpreting, and/or transliterating in various settings, both in and out of the classroom. The interpreter will play a crucial role in ensuring that all individuals have equal access to educational opportunities and university events. Additionally, the interpreter will provide accessibility services for various university departments and initiatives, including but not limited to Guests and Gusto, the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, AnimationFest, and other events that require communication access. This position is vital in fostering an inclusive environment at SCAD, allowing all members of the community to participate fully in academic and extracurricular activities. The ideal candidate will possess a strong commitment to accessibility and inclusion, demonstrating the ability to adapt to different environments and audiences. The role requires not only technical skills in interpreting but also a deep understanding of the cultural nuances involved in communication with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Responsibilities

  • Provide communication access for students, faculty, and staff with hearing impairments through interpreting, oral interpreting, and/or transliterating.
  • Assist in providing accessibility services for university departments and initiatives, including Guests and Gusto, SCAD Savannah Film Festival, and AnimationFest.
  • Ensure effective communication in both classroom and non-classroom settings.
  • Adapt interpreting techniques to suit various environments and audiences.

Requirements

  • ASL/English fluency is required.
  • AA degree in interpreting with a minimum of 4 years of interpreting experience in post-secondary or educational settings, or a BA degree with a minimum of 2 years of experience in post-secondary settings.
  • Certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), National Association of the Deaf (NIC), and/or Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) is required, or the ability to successfully obtain certification within 2 years of hire.
