About The Position

Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health New York is seeking an Art Teacher to plan and implement instructional art programs for students with intellectual/developmental disabilities. The role involves instructing students in creative art skills, evaluating their proficiency, and preparing reports on their progress. The Art Teacher will also be responsible for creating and revising Individual Treatment Plans for each student in art education, and meeting with parents/agencies during conferences. This position is under the direct supervision of the School Principal and is part of a multi-disciplinary team that uses a strengths-based approach, emphasizing applied behavior analysis and positive behavior supports.

Requirements

  • Masters in Special Education or in process.
  • BS/BA in education with SWD certification.
  • Two years experience working with individuals with I/DD is preferred.
  • Free of dependency and abuse of illegal or illicit drugs, alcohol, inhalants or other chemical or controlled substances.
  • Significant, prolonged, and frequent amounts of walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, and lifting of 70 lbs. or more.
  • Ability to singlehandedly effect the initial restraint of children and adolescents weighing between 75 and 150 lbs. using standard crisis intervention procedures.
  • Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement instructional art programs for students with intellectual/developmental disabilities.
  • Instruct assigned students in creative art skills necessary for development.
  • Evaluate students' level of proficiency in art to prescribe suitable activities.
  • Evaluate students' progress in meeting goals through observation and prepare reports as required.
  • Prepare Individual Treatment Plans for each student in the area of art education, including evaluation of each child's total program and preparation of annual goals.
  • Revise plans throughout the year according to student progress.
  • Meet with parents/agencies during parent-teacher conferences as assigned.
