About the position

The Aquatic Camp Counselor (Substitute) position is responsible for the supervision and safety of all campers in the City of Evanston Aquatics Camp. This role requires the ability to work various days as needed during the nine weeks of camp from June 9 to August 8, providing support when full-time counselors are absent. The counselor will enforce rules and regulations, maintain a safe environment, conduct camp activities, and communicate effectively with patrons and parents.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and ensure the safety of all campers.
  • Provide support for aquatic camp when full-time counselors are absent.
  • Enforce all rules and regulations pertaining to the Evanston Lakefront.
  • Use proper surveillance techniques to guard the swimming area.
  • Identify patrons in need of emergency assistance and respond appropriately.
  • Maintain a clean and safe beach and office environment.
  • Conduct camp and teach all designated lesson plans.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions as scheduled.
  • Complete written reports such as accident and incident reports.
  • Assist with pre and post-season maintenance-related tasks.

Requirements

  • Current American Red Cross Certifications in Lifeguard Training, CPR, AED, and First-Aid.
  • Available mid-May through Labor Day.
  • Preferred 18+ years of age.
  • Preferred at least one year as a lifeguard with the City of Evanston.
  • Pre-Employment Drug/Alcohol Screening.
  • Criminal and DCFS Background Check.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous Aquatic Camp or boating/sailing experience preferred.
