About the position

The Aquatic Camp Counselor is responsible for the supervision and safety of all campers in the City of Evanston Aquatics Camp. This position requires the ability to work all nine weeks of camp from June 9 to August 8 and assist at the lakefront until Labor Day. The counselor will enforce rules and regulations, maintain a safe environment, conduct camp activities, and communicate effectively with patrons and camp parents.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and ensure the safety of all campers.
  • Enforce all rules and regulations pertaining to the Evanston Lakefront.
  • Use proper surveillance techniques to guard the swimming area.
  • Identify patrons in need of emergency assistance and respond appropriately.
  • Maintain a clean and safe beach and office environment.
  • Conduct camp and teach all designated lesson plans.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions as scheduled.
  • Complete written reports such as accident and incident reports.
  • Communicate to supervisors if there are problems or issues needing special attention.
  • Assist with pre and post-season maintenance-related tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Current American Red Cross Certifications in Lifeguard Training, CPR, AED, and First-Aid.
  • Previous boating/sailing experience preferred.
  • Available mid-May through Labor Day.
  • Preferred 18+ years of age.
  • Preferred at least one year as a lifeguard with the City of Evanston.
  • Pre-Employment Drug/Alcohol Screening.
  • Criminal and DCFS Background Check.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge and skills in basic sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and boat driving.
