About the position

The Apprentice Brickmaker & Historic Masonry Trades position at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is designed for individuals interested in learning and preserving traditional masonry skills from the 18th century. The role involves working closely with experienced artisans, historians, and conservators to gain hands-on experience and knowledge about historic masonry techniques and the cultural context of the trade. The apprentice will engage in research, skill development, and public interpretation of the trade, contributing to the Foundation's mission of educating the public about colonial history.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and develop proficiency in working with appropriate materials, tools, and 18th-century methods under the direction of a master or journeyman supervisor.
  • Research available information and conduct ongoing supplemental research to enhance the existing body of knowledge.
  • Apply learned hand skills and research through demonstration while employing National Association of Interpretation techniques.
  • Provide in-depth thematic interpretations of the trade, history, and products and services in the community, region, and world.
  • Assist with in-depth seminars, workshops, and forums as required using Colonial Williamsburg assigned technological platforms.
  • Adhere to safety and security procedures for work, workshops, tools, and people.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school degree/G.E.D. with a general knowledge of 18th-century colonial history.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to learn, execute, demonstrate, research, and teach varied hand skills.
  • Familiarity with various universal and specific computer platforms as designated by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities while working within guidelines and procedures with general supervision.

Nice-to-haves

  • Four-year Degree in American History.
  • Successful Completion or Certification from a Trade School with a concentration in handwork.
