About the position

The Animal Technician is a hands-on role that is responsible for performing day-to-day operations at the swine research facility. This involves supporting activities related to the animals' health, daily feeding, and assisting in surgical/post-operative care and procedures per documented SOPs. This role is also responsible for performing basic maintenance of the research facilities and animal housing equipment, and for husbandry recordkeeping at the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Perform day-to-day operations at the swine research facility.
  • Support activities related to the animals' health and daily feeding.
  • Assist in surgical and post-operative care and procedures per documented SOPs.
  • Perform basic maintenance of the research facilities and animal housing equipment.
  • Maintain husbandry recordkeeping at the facility.

Requirements

  • H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • 1+ years of experience in large animal care and handling.
  • Working knowledge of animal husbandry, including nutrition and safety.
  • Must not have any other interaction with pigs outside of the company.
  • Flawless recordkeeping skills.
  • Physical Demand: Lift 75 lbs to waist level, Carry 50 lbs, Push/Pull 200 lbs on wheels.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associates Degree in animal sciences or related field.
  • 1+ years of experience in facility and equipment maintenance.
  • 1+ years of experience performing medical tests, observing behaviors, collecting samples, and administering medication to large animals.
  • 1+ years of experience in swine or animal recordkeeping.
  • 1+ years of experience operating farm equipment.
  • Working knowledge of data collection and recording.
  • Working knowledge of facility maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the Animal Welfare and other federal regulations regarding animal research including USDA, FDA and DEA.
