About the position

The Animal Facilities Manager is responsible for the management of the Science Division Animal Facility and its associated budget. The manager, in collaboration with the Animal Facilities Supervisor, ensures the proper care for animals used in teaching and research under Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee regulations, as well as ethical and legal guidelines. The Animal Facilities Manager partners with the Environmental Health and Safety officer and the Chair of the Institutional Biosafety Committee to ensure documentation of biosafety compliance in Olin-Rice labs. This is a full-time, exempt position that requires all work be done onsite. Most work will be done during standard business hours (~8:30 to 4:00pm) Monday-Friday, but this role does require on-call, weekend, or evening work as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and makes day-to-day decisions about the standard and emergency care of animals in the facility.
  • Supervises and directs work of student care technicians in the facility.
  • In consultation with the IACUC chair, assures compliance with all applicable ethical and legal guidelines for the faculty, student researchers, student workers or any other employees using the Animal Facility.
  • Coordinates non-standard care such as variable feeding, modified cage-washing schedules, or specialized enrichment when needed.
  • Helps maintain and implement training of all users (students, staff, faculty) with access to the animal facility on standard operating procedures.
  • Partners with EHS Coordinator to ensure documentation of training.
  • Supports facilities and Olin-Rice research and teaching labs for biosafety training and compliance.
  • Manages animal facility budget.
  • Procures animals and the supplies needed for the functioning of animal facility, as well as compliance with IACUC requirements.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required, Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Laboratory Animal Technician certificate required, preference for Lab Animal Technologist.
  • Knowledge of animal welfare and fundamental biosafety practices; preference for knowledge of rodent animal husbandry.
  • Use of computer systems for data management and communications.
  • Computer/technical skills with preference for experience with GoogleSuite and or Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of basic budget tracking and reporting.
  • Clear communication skills to ensure accurate and timely sharing of information with animal facility users, student workers, and department chairs.
  • Detailed note and record keeping skills.
  • Interest and capacity to supervise student workers and assist with their training.
