About the position
The Animal Caretaker (Farrier) position at Yosemite National Park involves the care and shoeing of over 100 government-owned horses and mules. The role includes performing minor veterinary treatments, managing inventory of shoeing supplies, and instructing animal packers in proper shoeing techniques. The position requires the ability to drive a truck with a trailer on challenging mountain roads and entails responsibilities during weekends and holidays.
Responsibilities
- Ensure all government horses and mules are properly shod, including corrective shoeing when required.
- Perform minor veterinary treatment on NPS owned horses and mules.
- Manage corral operations on weekends.
- Maintain inventory of horse and mule shoeing supplies, including shoes, nails, and tools.
- Instruct Animal Packers in proper horse and mule shoeing procedures.
- Drive a truck towing a three-horse trailer on winding, mountain roads in all weather conditions.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Possess and maintain a current Class A CDL (or higher) Commercial Driver's License.
- Ability to perform the work of an Animal Caretaker (Farrier) without more than normal supervision.
- Experience in shoeing and providing hoof care for horses and mules.
- Ability to provide minor veterinary treatment to horses and mules.
- Experience in maintaining stalls, corrals, and barns.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience in instructing others in shoeing procedures.
- Knowledge of materials and tools used in farrier work.
