About the position
The Ambulatory Care Assistant (MA) position at West Virginia University Hospitals involves providing essential support in an outpatient clinic setting. The role focuses on assisting medical staff with patient care and treatment, ensuring efficient operations within the unit, and performing various clinical and clerical tasks as directed by attending providers.
Responsibilities
- Provide support to medical staff to ensure patients' needs are met and to assure efficient operation of the outpatient unit.
- Assist providers in completing requisitions or forms for patient examination or testing.
- Ensure availability of test results for patient visits and assist patients and providers during medical office visits.
- Administer prescribed medication under the supervision of the attending provider.
- Perform qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations of specimens.
- Obtain and document patients' specimens as ordered and report test results to the medical provider.
- After training, perform assigned and/or all ordered POCT tests and maintain quality control testing and logs.
- Schedule additional ancillary testing as needed and assist providers with requisitions or forms for patient examination or testing.
- Act as a chaperone during medical examinations and ensure medical records and test results are available for visits.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program or Med Ed Program, or one year of clinical experience.
- West Virginia state criminal background check, and federal if applicable, required for DHHR regulated area.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within six (6) months if hired before March 3, 2024, or within 30 days if hired on or after March 3, 2024.
Nice-to-haves
- Registration or Certification as a Medical Assistant.
- One year of experience as a Medical Assistant or in patient care.
