About the position

The Alternative Sentencing Worker (ASW) position is designed to assist the community and clients by addressing the issues surrounding drug-related cases in the criminal justice system. The Department of Public Advocacy represents indigent clients appointed by the court in criminal cases, focusing on helping individuals overcome substance abuse and mental health issues. The ASW will work as part of a defense team in the Bowling Green South Trial Office, conducting assessments to determine clients' specific needs and preparing alternative sentences that typically include a treatment component, whether inpatient, outpatient, or long-term mental health or substance abuse treatment.

Responsibilities

• Conduct assessments to determine clients' specific needs.
• Prepare alternative sentences that include treatment components.
• Work as a member of the defense team to assist clients charged with criminal offenses related to substance abuse or mental health.
• Advocate for clients and explore options to help them become productive members of the community.

Requirements

• Master's degree in social work, sociology, psychology, family studies, counseling, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license prior to employment.
• Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment.

Nice-to-haves

• Bachelor's degree supplemented by one year of professional social work, substance use disorder, or mental health experience.
