About the position

The Airport Manager & Chief Flight Instructor is responsible for overseeing the operations of the Franklin County Airport, ensuring compliance with regulations, and providing exceptional customer service. This role involves managing airport staff, developing budgets, generating revenue through various services, and maintaining safety and security protocols. Additionally, the position includes responsibilities as a Chief Flight Instructor, where the individual will provide flight training, develop training programs, and promote the flight school.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the Franklin County Airport in accordance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Develop and promote the Franklin County Airport, including providing tours and promotional activities.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing at the airport based on the operating schedule.
  • Schedule and maintain regular business hours, 8 am-4 pm Monday-Friday, and provide on-call services 24/7.
  • Develop and administer an operating budget for the airport in collaboration with the Director of Business Services.
  • Provide periodic financial reports to the Director of Business Services, monthly and as requested.
  • Generate revenue through a Pilot Supply Shop and minor aircraft repair services.
  • Generate revenue through the sale of aviation fuel and manage fuel purchases.
  • Generate revenue through lease and rental agreements for hangars.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with Franklin County officials and TDOT authorities.
  • Collaborate with officials to maintain the Airport Capital Improvement Plan (ACIP).
  • Manage the state and federal grants process to fund the ACIP.
  • Develop and maintain an updated emergency and security plan for the airport.
  • Maintain the terminal, hangars, runway, and grounds in accordance with regulations.
  • Complete daily inspections to maintain security and safe operations.
  • Maintain all operational equipment and fixtures at the airport.
  • Coordinate building and facilities repairs and maintenance with University Facilities Management.
  • Provide excellent ground and flight instruction and maintain up-to-date student records as Chief Flight Instructor.
  • Develop a flight training program for various pilot certificates and ratings.
  • Promote the Sewanee Flying Tigers Flight School and represent it positively to clients.
  • Manage and mentor other flight instructors and develop new courses and income streams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Proven record of flight instruction excellence.
  • Business management experience.
  • FAA Flight Instructor ASEL and Instrument certification.
