About the position

The Afterschool Counselor position at the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina involves providing direction and implementing program curriculum for school-aged children. The role focuses on creating a quality experience for children and their parents, emphasizing the YMCA values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. This part-time position requires working hours from Monday to Friday, typically between 2 PM and 6 PM, with additional support needed during Teacher Workdays and Holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Implements curriculum within established guidelines.
  • Designs and implements daily lesson/activity plans.
  • Supervises the children, classroom, and all activities.
  • Makes ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child.
  • Ensures parents are kept informed of all site and program activities and communicates both positive and negative behavior of children to parents.
  • Maintains program site and equipment.
  • Maintains required program records including attendance sheets, incident sheets, and behavior reports.
  • Attends and participates in program activities, staff meetings, and staff training.
  • Follows and implements the Healthy Eating and Physical Activity standards.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • CPR, First Aid and AED certification within 30 days of hire date.
  • Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.

Benefits

  • Part-time hourly wage of $13.72 - $15.12 upon completion of training and relevant experience.
