About the position

We are looking for natural born leaders who have a passion for education. This position provides support to after school programs and expanded learning programs including but not limited to academic intervention, homework support, enrichment activities and supervised recreation. This is a part-time, at-will, non-benefited position. Hours are limited to less than 1,000 hours per year. The City of Modesto is currently recruiting for After School Program Leaders to join our team. The Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department works closely with the community providing programming to youth, seniors and all citizens. As a department, we take our work seriously, but try not to take ourselves too seriously. We strive to foster a collaborative and collegial atmosphere among staff while providing high quality programs, activities and events to the community and neighborhoods. We take pride in offering excellent community service while remaining adaptable and responsive to our residents' needs and expectations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain clear, effective and timely communication and collaborative working relationship with supervisory staff.
  • Supervise program participants.
  • Supervise and maintain an appropriate student to staff ratio.
  • Promote and ensure a safe and positive environment for all program participants.
  • Provide academic assistance to program participants.
  • Plan and implement site curriculum and recreational and enrichment activities.
  • Utilize positive guidance techniques and appropriate behavior support for program participants; adhere and enforce all rules consistently and equitably.
  • Monitor and report any observations or concerns regarding the needs and problems of participants to supervisory staff.
  • Assist in daily set-up and cleanup; maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment for participants.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City and School District employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs and procedures.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of CPR and First aid methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of State of California curriculum based on Common Core Standards.
  • Knowledge of positive discipline and redirection techniques.
  • Knowledge of practices and techniques to achieve group cooperation in recreation programs.
  • Knowledge of instructional techniques and strategies.
  • Knowledge of light custodial maintenance techniques.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
  • Ability to work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to develop favorable public relations and maintain an appearance that projects a positive image.
  • Ability to think clearly, quickly and accurately in emergencies.
  • Ability to maintain an atmosphere that is physically and emotionally safe.
  • Ability to work various shifts including days, evenings, weekend and holidays as assigned.
  • Ability to prepare reports and records.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Ability to run forward, backward and laterally.
  • Ability to perform light custodial maintenance tasks.

Nice-to-haves

  • Volunteer or paid work experience with children is desirable.
  • Completion of forty-eight (48 units) of higher education or successfully pass a local assessment of knowledge or skills that demonstrates the equivalent of the above requirements.

Benefits

  • Sick leave credit at the rate of twenty-four (24) hours or three (3) days per calendar year, per AB 1522.
  • Public Agency Retirement Services Alternate Retirement System Plan (PARS ARS): Total contribution of 7.5% - employee pays 3.75% of wages (pre-tax) and the City pays 3.75%.
