About the position

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) plays a crucial role in providing administrative support to Veterans seeking medical and behavioral health treatment at outpatient and specialty clinics. This position involves direct interaction with Veterans and their representatives, addressing their concerns, scheduling appointments, and ensuring they receive the necessary information and assistance regarding their medical benefits. The AMSA is responsible for maintaining patient records, coordinating care, and demonstrating a commitment to patient-centered care and the core values of the VA.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary contact for Veterans seeking medical or behavioral health treatment.
  • Determine the nature of individual Veteran's needs and provide appropriate guidance and information.
  • Schedule, reschedule, and cancel patient appointments using the VistA Appointment Scheduling Enhancement (VSE) package.
  • Educate Veterans and their families about medical benefits and procedures for obtaining them.
  • Refer Veterans to appropriate medical staff for immediate evaluation when necessary.
  • Maintain privacy of patient information and ensure proper handling of sensitive materials.
  • Process provider orders and schedule follow-up appointments promptly and courteously.
  • Monitor appointment requests and verify patient demographics and insurance information during check-in.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required to apply for this job.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
  • Six months of experience in clerical, office, customer service, or administrative work, or one year above high school, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of medical clinicians and patients.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology and administrative functions related to patient care.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with electronic medical records and scheduling systems.
  • Knowledge of VA health administration laws and policies.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.
